About the position

We have a vacancy for a full-time permanent position as researcher in the field of “Icing on unmanned aerial vehicles” at NTNU’s Department of Engineering Cybernetics.

Engineering cybernetics is about automatic control and monitoring of technical systems such as ships, aircraft, cars, petroleum production platforms, wind turbines, underwater vehicles, robots, transport systems and industrial processes.

This field is at the front of the technological development, where research on unmanned aerial vehicles is rooted in the strategic area of Autonomous Systems at the Faculty for Information Technologies and Electrical Engineering at NTNU.

The workplace is at NTNU Gløshaugen, Trondheim. The position is associated with the NTNU UAV-lab and the Centre for Autonomous Marine Operations and Systems (AMOS).

Duties of the position

The researcher will participate in various research projects primarily related to icing on UAVs. Many of the projects will involve close collaboration within the department, students, other parts of NTNU, external research partners, industry and end users.
The position is interdisciplinary and involves collaboration with scientists in aerodynamics, mechanical engineering, material science, electrical engineering, instrumentation and control engineering.The main work tasks will be:

  • Research and development related to modelling and simulation of aerodynamics and thermodynamics, instrumentation and autonomous solutions for icing detection, electro-thermal anti-icing, de-icing, flight control and path planning in adverse weather conditions with icing.
  • Conduct experiments in icing wind tunnels, flight testing, and develop experimental infrastructure at NTNU.
  • Project management, planning, coordination, risk and quality management.
  • Develop partnerships and applications for external funding.
  • Supervision of master and doctoral students.
  • Publication, dissemination and public outreach.

The position will also contribute to other tasks related to the department’s ongoing research and education activities. The working area of the position can change in order to serve the department’s needs.


Required selection criteria

The following requirements are necessary for the position:

  • Doctoral degree in a relevant area such as control engineering (cybernetics) or aerospace engineering.
  • Documented expertize on the effects of icing on small unmanned aerial vehicles (e.g. aerodynamics, thermodynamics and flight control) and icing protection systems.
  • Relevant competence on testing in wind tunnels, preferably icing wind tunnels.
  • Relevant competence on computational fluid dynamics.
  • Good written and oral English language skills

The expertize must be documented through publications in recognized international journals and conferences.

Preferred selection criteria

  • Experience with student supervision.
  • Project management, planning, coordination, risk and quality management.
  • Experience with writing research proposals, and proven ability to attract funding for research.
  • Interest in innovation and entrepreneurship.
Personal characteristics

Personal skills will be given large weight. It is important that the person being hired is systematic, can contribute to management and administrative work, has good collaboration skills, and will enjoy working with both employees and students. It is also important that this person is flexible, can work efficiently in multiple projects at the same time, shows willingness to take initiative and responsibility, and contribute with creative solutions in exciting research projects.

The work environment is international and the successful candidate must be able to communicate well in English both orally and in writing, as well as master Norwegian or be prepared to learn Norwegian.
Some travelling must be expected in connection with field operations and testing.

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of researcher (code 1109) is normally remunerated at gross from NOK 530 000 – 700 000 before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The autonomous vehicle research at NTNU has civilian objectives. However, some of the equipment being used is subject to export regulations or other limitations such as ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations), and the position requires that the applicant has permission to use such equipment. Applicants who are citizens of Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Sweden or NATO countries will satisfy the requirements.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU

The position is subject to external funding.
